Outstanding Olin Opportunities

We receive questions like do you have a library (yes), can I visit campus (also, yes), what division NCAA are you (we are not accredited, but we do have intramural and club sports), does the dining hall have gluten-free options (they sure do!), and can I transfer in (not exactly, but yes). These questions and many more got us thinking about the inquiries that stand out the most and how those highlight the uniqueness of our community.

The Sensational Shop

It is widely known that Olin’s ethos leans heavily on hands-on engineering education, and that is in sharpest focus when you walk through the shop spaces. President May calls the shop “Olin’s Sacred Cow” and professor Alessandara Ferzoco has called it the “Beating Heart of the College.” I am energized and inspired daily by the spirit and enthusiasm that students bring to the shops.

Computer Science at Olin (It Exists)

The question I hear the most from prospective students visiting campus is: “Does Olin have a computer science program”? While Olin does not offer a BS in Computer Science, Engineering with Computing (E:C) is the Olin CS adjacent degree and a great opportunity for those looking to separate themselves in the job market.

Amazon Robotics

Amazon Robotics is engaging SCOPE students in exploring the space of classifying living and non-living beings, locating them, and understanding the vectors they’re heading using commercial-grade and consumer-grade sensing systems.

Dispensing Thermal Putty Accurately for Improved Performance

This year, the Blue Origin SCOPE Team will design and fabricate an automated thermal putty dispensing machine for use in a lab environment.

Endoscope Tip Rotation

This year’s Boston Scientific SCOPE team will design and fabricate a mechanism to provide enhanced access of tools and visualization at the tip of a duodenoscope without causing unintended scope movement. 

Enhancing Early Literacy-Building Apps with Improved Audio Understanding

This year’s SCOPE team, like the 2024-2025 team will join a large interdisciplinary research team and contribute key components to proof-of-concept instructional games for K-3rd grade students developing reading skills.

Push Test- Continued Automation

As part of New Balance’s continual work to improve associates' work experience while maintaining high-quality standards, the SCOPE students will build from last year's SCOPE team to develop a highly-automated solution, creating tooling that reduces the manual tests and improves the consistency of the quality check.

Crosswalk Safety Automation

This team will be exploring opportunities to automatically identify the presence of pedestrians and activate safety measures to improve pedestrian safety.
