Passive Attenuation for Spool Energy

Faculty Advisor: Scott Hersey

Sponsor: ANCORE

ANCORE designs and assembles innovative strength-training equipment used in rehabilitation, athletic performance, home fitness, and commercial gym environments. This SCOPE team will partner with ANCORE to explore a challenging and highly applied mechanical engineering problem at the intersection of dynamics, motion control, and product innovation.

The team will investigate how to manage energy and dynamic motion within a compact, high-efficiency mechanical cable system while preserving the smooth, responsive feel expected from premium strength equipment. Students will have the opportunity to explore multiple solution pathways through concept development, mechanical design, prototyping, testing, and experimental validation—balancing performance, manufacturability, simplicity, and real-world product constraints.

This project will benefit from strengths in mechanical engineering, dynamics, mechanism design, prototyping, fabrication, testing, and data-driven problem solving. Students interested in motion systems, energy management, product development, or hands-on engineering will be especially well positioned to contribute.

For ANCORE and its customers, advancing compact mechanical systems has the potential to improve product robustness, elevate the user experience, and expand access to high-quality cable training in more places and for more people.
