Pedestrian crosswalk safety systems often rely on push-button activation, requiring pedestrians to manually request protection. Building on a successful proof of concept from the prior year, this SCOPE team will advance an AI-powered system that uses edge computing and computer vision to automatically detect when a pedestrian intends to cross and trigger a rectangular rapid flashing beacon (RRFB) to alert drivers. The team will validate and improve the detection model, design weatherproof and field-ready hardware, conduct market research with municipal transportation agencies, and explore the path from prototype to deployable product.
