The Foundry Has a New Name: Catalyst

With the resurgence of interest in entrepreneurship at Olin, the Foundry is transforming to fit the community’s needs. The Foundry has been a resource for Olin students along their entrepreneurial journey for many years. Now, with the new entrepreneurship curriculum at Olin and excitement around Parcel B, a group investing in Olin ventures, the Foundry has decided to better align its mission to best fit the needs of the aspiring Olin entrepreneurs.

“The Foundry is changing its name to Catalyst to better reflect the revised goals and values of the organization,” says Olin College Junior and Catalyst Board Director Nicholas Sherman. “The point isn’t just to ‘found,’ the point is to spark interest in students and if they have a venture propel and connect them to others and to needed resources.”

To help accomplish that, Catalyst is opening a co-working space located in the Campus Center on the third floor. The Catalyst space has desks for student ventures, an area to practice and revise pitches and collaborative work areas to allow budding entrepreneurs to bounce ideas off each other. Several Olin students have already expressed an interest in using the new space for their ventures, and newcomers are always welcome.

Micah Reid, an Olin student involved in startup activity, says she is looking forward to using the new space, “I want to use the space to work on day to day startup-related work around people who are going through the same process so we can help each other.”

This space will also be a home base for Catalyst’s weekly meetings at 6:30PM on Monday nights and their monthly standup where students share updates on their ventures and discuss ideas for new ones.

In the recent past, the Foundry has coordinated events including: alumni speakers such as Lee Edwards of Parcel B, a student panel about interning at startups, and their biannual Startup Fairs. Catalyst plans similar events for the upcoming year in addition to new events such as “entrepreneur office hours,” networking events, and mentoring system meetings.

Catalyst will host a launch event for the co-working space on September 21, during Alumni Weekend.
