Olin Conductorless Orchestra to Offer Free Public Concert in Needham

The Olin Conductorless Orchestra, the nation’s only collegiate ensemble to perform without a conductor, will offer a free public concert in Needham Saturday, December 17, from 8 – 10 pm. The concert will take place in Powers Hall in Needham Town Hall, 1471 Highland Ave.

The orchestra will perform music for the theater by Mozart, Gershwin and Shostakovich, among other selections. The performance will be followed by a reception in which audience members will have chance to meet the performers, who are all students in engineering at Olin College.

As a result of performing without a conductor, the orchestra, consisting of 27 musicians, has adopted a collaborative style of music making. In this approach, the performers must listen carefully to each other and be prepared sometimes to lead, sometimes to follow as the music unfolds. This leads to fresh and nuanced interpretations of the classical repertoire that have won acclaim from audiences in the Boston area and New York.

The concert is free and open to the public, but registration is required. Please visit to register.
