Polina Segalova, Class of 2006
Dr. Polina A. Segalova is a member of Olin College’s inaugural class, graduating with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. She is also an Olin Partner, having spent her first year at Olin developing the College’s initial curriculum, writing the student government constitution, and outlining the student “away” experience. Throughout her time on campus, Dr. Segalova was an active participant in research, co-curricular activities, and the student government’s executive board. She continued to be a champion for Olin after graduation, serving as a representative of her class on the Olin Alumni Council and as Chair of the Events Committee. In order to foster closer relations between alumni and current students, Dr. Segalova launched the Banter program, which pairs members of the two groups to foster interesting conversations.
After graduating from Olin, Dr. Segalova earned her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University as a recipient of NSF’s Graduate Research Fellowship, where her research focused on medical devices and cardiovascular fluid dynamics. While pursuing her graduate degrees, she was elected Chair of Stanford’s Graduate Student Council and worked to address graduate student issues on campus and beyond. Segalova also consulted for an array of medical device companies (ranging from technologies focused on heart implants to dialysis) and became passionate about the field.
Dr. Segalova worked in R&D for Stryker Endoscopy, where she developed new tools for minimally invasive surgeries and launched a division-wide effort to introduce design thinking methodologies to her colleagues. Dr. Segalova currently works in product development at Naya Health, an early stage venture-backed startup focused on delivering innovative technologies to families. She was recently elected to the Board of Trustees of Olin College.
Dr. Segalova lives in the Bay Area of California with her husband, Matthew Colyer (Olin ’08), and son Apollo. She enjoys running, hiking, and the occasional trip to the San Francisco Ballet.
